Two Late Home Runs Not Enough as FDU Steals Double Header

Teaneck, NJ – The Mercyhurst Softball team had a long road trip up to FDU today. This is their second conference series of the season as they continue the search for their first Division I win. FDU ran away with the first game as they won 7-2. In the second game, the Lakers rallied back to tie the game 2-2 in the seventh. After two extra innings, the Knights walked it off to win game two.

Game One
The first game started out a little slow. The pitchers and infielders did their job as neither side recorded a hit. In the top of the second, Ava Zubovic hit a single that advanced Cameryn Mullaly to second base after she walked. Bailey Cannon stepped up to the plate and hit a double to right center that brought in Mullaly and gave the Lakers a 1-0 lead.

FDU struck back in the bottom of the third. The Knights scored three runs in three consecutive at-bats to give them a 3-1 lead. The Lakers were able to escape any further damage with a double play between Eliza Reynolds, Emelie Pascual, and Jazlynn Sanders. Kaylee O'Sullivan added another run in the bottom of the fifth.

In the top of the sixth, Emelie Pascual smacked a double to left center field to which allowed Jenna Wojtkowiak to score for the Lakers. However, the bottom of the sixth was when FDU added another three runs off a three-run double from Kailee O'Sullivan. The Knights took game one 7-2.

Game Two
Both sides were off to a slow start in the second game. Bailey Cannon was on the mound for Mercyhurst and Brooklyn Shroyer for FDU. There was only one hit in the first two innings. The Knights got on the board first from a sac fly by Kailee O'Sullivan that allowed Mikayla Conklin to score. FDU added another in the bottom of the sixth to extend the lead to two.

In the top of the seventh, with everything to play for, Mackenzie Gillis stepped up to the plate and hit a one-run bomb over the fence to give the Lakers some hope of coming back. Then, after the next batter struck out, Ava Zubovic smashed a homer of her own to level the game. Jenna Wojtkowiak hit a double on the next at bat, but Brooklyn Shroyer was able to strike out Emelie Pascual to prevent the Lakers from taking the lead.

The first three batters for FDU all grounded out in the bottom of the seventh as they game went into extra innings. The extra innings were deadlocked until the bottom of the ninth. Here Brianna Holguin hit a walk-off single to right center and Mikayla Conklin scored to win the game 3-2 for FDU.
