Team Effort Lifts Softball to First Wins of Season

MRYTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Mercyhurst University women's softball team collects their first wins of the season against Bemidji State during Spring Break Training on Thursday afternoon. The Lakers improved to 2-8 on the season while Bemidji State fell to 10-4.

The Lakers collected the most amount of runs scored in a double header this season after pushing 15 runs across to their opponents eight. Mercyhurst took away game one by the score of 9-2. They finished the day off with a 6-4 victory.

In game one both teams went through three complete innings of a scoreless game before Bemidji crossed the plate at the bottom of the fourth. The Beavers took a 2-0 lead over the Lakers in the bottom of the fifth after Jessica Yost tallied a double to score her first RBI of the day.

The Lakers answered back late in the contest after scoring back to back multiple run innings through the top of the sixth and seventh. Sophomore Courtney Brothers led off the inning with one out off of a single and advanced to third after back to back walks gave the Lakers loaded bases. Freshman Rachel DiBartolomeo came up big with a triple to take the lead 3-2 after driving in all three Lakers on base. Senior Becky Malaga then tallied her first RBI of the day after hitting a single to allow Dibartolomeo cross the dish for a 4-2 lead.

Mercyhurst stopped a Beaver two-out rally at the bottom of the sixth and picked up where they left off at the top of the final inning. Mercyhurst drove in a five runs off of two hits and capitalized on four errors by Bemidji State. Senior Kaleigh Milliman led off the Lakers at their final at bat and a team effort by the Lakers drove in the nine unanswered runs.

The Lakers marked a season-high 12 hits during the first battle against the Beavers. The Lakers also marked a career-low in just two errors throughout the double header.

Junior Annie Truelove (1-5) captured her first win of the season on the mound through seven complete innings pitched. She allowed six hits, walked five and struck out one out of the 27 batters faced.

In game two, the Lakers gave up three runs at the top of the first inning after back to back hits from Alayna Krejci and Kaitlyn Shea of Bemidji State. Mercyhurst however answered back at the bottom of the first inning by driving in four runs of their own. Malaga connected again to hit her fourth single of the day and load the bases. Senior Courtney Smith and freshman Francesca Costanzo drew walks for two runs scored. Then with two outs Milliman hit her first triple of the season to take the lead 4-3.

Mercyhurst drove in two more runs across the dish at the bottom of the fourth to extend the 6-3 lead against the Beavers. Magala tallied her second hit of the game after doubling to drive in DiBartolomeo and sophomore Taylor Jezuit who reached base earlier in the inning.

Bemidji State attempted a seventh inning rally after Mikayla Osterman doubled to begin the final inning. Dupay grounded out but drove in Osterman to narrow the gap by two runs against the Lakers. Krejci connected again against Mercyhurst for a double but it was not enough as the Lakers defense knocked out all three outs with one runner on base.

Junior Alexandra Puckly took her first win of the season (1-1) after pitching all seven innings in game two. She allowed eight hits for four earned runs and one strikeout on 27 batters faced.

The Lakers continue their Spring Training at the Salem International Tournament on Saturday, March 15 in Salem, Va. The Lakers will compete against four opponents beginning with Wheeling Jezuit at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday.
