ABOUT THE NCAA WOMEN'S FROZEN FOUR
The semifinals and finals of the National Collegiate Women’s Ice Hockey Champions called the “Women’s Frozen Four.” This moniker is similar to the name used by the NCAA Men’s Ice Hockey Championship.
The annual NCAA Women’s Ice Hockey Championship determines the top women’s ice hockey teams in NCAA Division I. The Division I tournament is officially called the National Collegiate Women’s Ice Hockey Championship.
This tournament is a single elimination competition of eight teams that has determined the women’s collegiate national champion since 2000-2001, when the NCAA began sponsoring the sport.
FUN FACTS ABOUT THE NCAA WOMEN'S FROZEN FOUR IN ERIE
BRAGGING RIGHTS - 2011 will be the first time the NCAA Women’s Frozen Four takes place in the state of Pennsylvania. Go Erie!
FROZEN FOUR - The term “frozen four” is derived from the term “Final Four,” most commonly associated with Division I basketball.
HOME SWEET HOME - More than 20 elite female athletes, some of whom represent their countries at the international and Olympic levels, call Erie, PA their home away from home from August through May. These full-time student athletes provide exciting competition to youth and adults in the Erie community at Mercyhurst’s Ice Center.
THE PATTY KAZMAIER AWARD
This award is given to the top woman college ice hockey player in the United States and it is presented during the women’s annual ice hockey championship, the Frozen Four. Mercyhurst’s own Vicki Bendus was awarded this top honor in 2010, as a junior.
