LA JOLLA, Calif. – Five unanswered goals in the fourth quarter allowed the Mercyhurst women's water polo to come back and win its consolation-round matchup in the Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) Championships against Erie rival Gannon at Canyonview Aquatic Center Saturday afternoon.
The win completes a three-game sweep of the Golden Knights for the Lakers, who move on to the fifth-place game tomorrow against Fresno Pacific at 12:40 ET, 9:40 PT.
Freshmen
Maddie Nye and
Chloe Kunst combined for five goals to lead the Lakers in scoring. Additional goal scorers included
Nicki Borella,
Mackenzie Ryburn,

Gannon started strong with the game's first three goals, all by Erie-native Allison Cooney, to take a 3-0 lead early in the second period. Nye responded with her first on the power play, shortly followed by Glass' score to cut the deficit to one entering half time.
Both teams exchanged two goals apiece in the third quarter, keeping Gannon in front 5-4 entering the final period.
That's when the Lakers began their run that would not let up until time expired. Mercyhurst rattled off five-straight scores, with Borella assisting on first three. Maldonado gave the Lakers the go-ahead marker with 5:14 remaining. Borella capped off the game with a power-play score with 31 seconds left.
Sarah O'Keefe was solid in goal, making 11 saves against just five goals allowed. In its three games against Gannon this season, Mercyhurst has held the Golden Knights to an average of just four goals per contest.
