Lakers' Season Ends With Second Loss In Atlantic Regional

JAMESTOWN, N.Y. – The Mercyhurst baseball team's postseason run ended Sunday night with a 6-1 loss to Winston-Salem State in the Atlantic Regional fourth round played at Russell Diethrick Park.

The Lakers (38-8) are eliminated from the tournament while the Rams (39-18) move on to the championship round against 14th-ranked West Chester.

Both teams got a chance to bat in the first inning before rain showers delayed the game in the top of the second inning. The delay lasted four hours and ten minutes before resuming at 7:20 p.m.

The Rams struck first with three runs in the third inning. Two Mercyhurst errors added to a pair of Winston-Salem hits allowed the Rams to get in front.

In the bottom of the third inning, Mercyhurst struck back with a solo home run by Jimmy Latona to left field. His 11th home run of the season ended up being one of just two Lakers' hits for the game.

Winston-Salem neutralized Mercyhurst's bats thanks to stellar pitching efforts by winning-pitcher Seth Reeves (10-3) and save-recipient Corbin Easter (2) in addition to multiple run-saving defensive plays. Reeves threw six innings with two hits and eight strikeouts and Easter picked up a three-inning save while allowing just two baserunners.

Lakers' starter Vincenzo Lucente did not allow an earned run in seven innings but four Lakers' errors put him on the hook for his second loss of the season (5-2). He allowed seven hits and three unearned runs while fanning six on 128 pitches.

Winston-Salem picked up insurance runs in the eighth and ninth innings before closing the game out.

The Lakers' season proved to be one of the best in program history, with the Lakers finishing with a 21-3 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) record. Mercyhurst also ranked first nationally in both the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) and D2 Baseball News polls a combined 11 times.

Mercyhurst also featured several standout individual performers, with seven players being named to All-PSAC teams and six receiving All-Atlantic Region honors.
