BUTLER, Pa. --
Hank Morrison's eighth-inning, go-ahead home run lifted the 21st-ranked Mercyhurst baseball team to a 3-2 victory over cross-town rival Gannon in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Tournament game on Tuesday.
Morrison led off the eighth with his solo blast after the Lakers scored single runs in the sixth and seventh frames to climb back from a 2-0 deficit.
Daniel Elliott got Mercyhurst started with a leadoff dinger in the sixth. Then, in the seventh,
Collin Fantaskey singled, moved to second base on a
Brendan Cox sacrifice bunt and then scored on an RBI single by
Austin Alonge to tie the game at 2-2. That set the stage for Morrison's game-winner.
Gannon had scored its two runs in the third inning. Nate Cardy and Matt Oruch had back-to-back doubles with Oruch's hit driving in Cardy. Oruch later scored on an error.
Joe Gnacinski started on the hill for Mercyhurst. He gave up only one earned run (two total) on five hits while recording three strikeouts and three walks. However, Gnacinski pitched only three innings before relievers
Matthew Keating and
Jake Hall combined for six shutout innings.
Keating gave up two hits and struck out two batters in four innings of work.
Hall inherited a runner in the GU eighth and, after a Golden Knight sacrifice, he struck out two hitters with a runner on second base. Hall then worked a 1-2-3 ninth, earning the win for himself in the process.
Alonge batted 2-for-3 with an RBI for the Lakers. Elliott added a 2-for-4 game.
The Lakers (40-11) will return to action later in the day on Tuesday when they take on No. 1-ranked Millersville at 6:30 p.m.
