HAYWARD, California – The Mercyhurst University women's water polo team was defeated Saturday afternoon by top seeded UC San Diego, 16-4, in game three at the Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) Championships.
Kennedy Watson led the Lakers with two goals, one assist and one steal.
The Tritons jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, before
Kennedy Watson scored Mercyhurst's first goal of the game on the power play with 45 seconds remaining in the opening period. Senior
Annie Blackman was credited with the assist.
After UC San Diego scored the first two goals to open the second period, Watson would respond with her second goal of the afternoon at the 5:43 mark, cutting the deficit to two.
From there, UC San Diego would go on to score nine unanswered goals, before
Meagan Marques ended the scoring drought with 41 seconds remaining in the third.
Katie Appell closed the scoring in the fourth with an assist from Watson.
Senior goalkeeper
Jesse Sworden finished the game with six saves and four steals.
The Lakers will compete in the WWPA Championship third place game tomorrow against the loser of game 4 -- (3) Cal East Bay versus (2) Sonoma State – at 2:45 PM EST.
