The Mercyhurst baseball team ranked ninth the in the Collegiate Baseball News Division II Preseason Coaches' Poll released on December 21, 2016.
 
The Lakers completed the 2016 season with a 43-10 overall record and were the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West Division Champions. The Lakers also qualified for the 2016 NCAA Atlantic Regional Tournament.
 
2016 national champion Nova Southeastern topped the preseason poll while the PSAC's Millersville ranked fifth.
