LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Mercyhurst University men's water polo team posted an 0-4 record at the Bucknell Invitational over the weekend in the team's opening contests of the 2015 campaign. The Lakers dropped a 16-7 decision to the University of Toronto and then an 11-8 setback to George Washington on Saturday and then fell 12-7 to Fordham and 20-9 to Johns Hopkins on Sunday.
Against Toronto, senior
Dave Matulis and freshman
Ivan Ariza led the way with two goals apiece while senior
Jordan Hodur and freshmen
Connor Schmitz and
Jackson Rehmet each chipped in with a goal each.
Later on Saturday, against George Washington, Mercyhurst fell behind 9-3 at halftime before outscoring the Colonials 5-2 in the second half in dropping an 11-8 decision. Schmitz and junior
Jack Howe each scored three times in the loss. Juniors
Michael Lawson and
Joey Ryan also scored for the Lakers while junior goalkeeper
Andrew Too-A-Foo posted 13 saves.
On Sunday, Mercyhurst opened play with a 12-7 loss to Fordham. Matulis led the Lakers with four goals while Ariza, Schmitz, and freshman
Philip Jenny also scored. Too-A-Foo had 18 saves. The Lakers then dropped to 20-9 decision to Johns Hopkins, getting four more goals from Matulis in the loss. Howe and Hodur scored two goals apiece while freshman
Matt Bachler scored his first collegiate goal. Sophomore
Gene Bilbao stopped seven shots between the pipes.
Mercyhurst will look to regroup on Saturday, September 26 when it plays its first home matches of the season at the North East Aquatic Center. The Lakers will play against Washington & Jefferson at 12:00 p.m. and then will play against Salem International at 4:00 p.m.
