SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – The Mercyhurst University women's water polo team got back to the .500 mark Saturday with a pair of victories at Notre Dame College. The Lakers defeated the host team 16-7 before downing Gannon University 12-4 later in the day. Mercyhurst improved to 7-7 on the season.
In the opener, Mercyhurst led 3-1 after a quarter, 8-2 at halftime, and 11-4 after three. Ten different players registered points, led by junior
Meagan Marques and freshman
Katie Appell with three goals and an assist each. Sophomores
Jena Clinch,
Becky Insalaco,
Vicky Arciniega, and freshman
Cristal Maldonado had two apiece while juniors
Annie Blackman and
Aleeyse Utech added solo scores. Maldonado's goals were her first of the season. Sophomore
Amanda Wolterink led the team with three assists, her first points of the season.
Sophomore goaltender
Rachel Stock squared her record at 3-3 and made six saves. As a team, Mercyhurst recorded 15 steals.
In the nightcap, Mercyhurst outscored Gannon a combined 7-0 in the second and fourth quarters. The Lakers led 3-2 after one, 7-2 at intermission, and 9-4 after three quarters. Sophomore
Becky Insalaco led Mercyhurst with four goals. Marques, Blackman, and Appell had two each while Clinch and Utech had the other tallies. Clinch contributed three helpers and Marques two as they joined Insalaco with four-point games.
Junior netminder
Jesse Sworden evened her record at 4-4 by making eleven saves. She also had six of the Lakers' 18 steals.
Mercyhurst will visit Grove City College next Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
