ERIE, Pa. - Our final look at the 2011 Mercyhurst College football team will take a peek at the Laker coaching staff, led by tenth-year head coach
Marty Schaetzle. He had a chance to sit down with us to discuss his staff for the upcoming season.
Schaetzle, entering his tenth season at the helm, is the longest-tenured coach in program history, having surpassed current Mercyhurst Director of Athletics
Joe Kimball. Last season, he also became the all-time winningest coach in school history, picking up his 42nd win at Mercyhurst in a 28-14 win over Bloomsburg in the Lakers' first-ever NCAA playoff game. He surpassed Kimball and first-ever head coach Tony DeMeo with the victory.
A 1983 graduate of Bucknell, Schaetzle was named the PSAC Coach of the Year last season, was the Don Hansen Football Gazette co-Coach of the Year, and was a top five finalist for the Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year Award. Last year's team was named the ECAC and Lambert Meadowlands Division II Team of the Year.
Schaetzle and the Lakers will play six of their first seven games of the season at home, beginning with a non-conference matchup on Saturday, September 3 against Notre Dame College. Last year, Mercyhurst knocked off the first-year program, 23-0, in Lyndhurst, Ohio. Kickoff is slated for 12 p.m. at Tullio Field.
