ERIE, Pa. - Over the course of the next two weeks, we will be showcasing a position-by-position outlook for the Mercyhurst College football team leading up to its season opener against Notre Dame College at Tullio Field on September 3. We will begin our two-week series with the wide receivers.
Senior
Trevor Kennedy (5-11, 205, Akron, OH/Firestone), the 2010 PSAC West Offensive Player of the Year and All-PSAC West First Team member, highlights an abundance of experienced receivers who should continue to provide plenty of excitement in 2011.
A speedy and versatile athlete, Kennedy turned in one of the best all-around offensive performances in school history en route to earning the PSAC West Offensive Player of the Year award. He was also named the PSAC Championship Game Most Valuable Player after amassing 250 all-purpose yards that included three touchdowns (two receiving) and one 78-yard punt return to paydirt. In the 56-37 title game victory, he recorded new career-highs with 11 catches for 163 yards, including an 81-yard touchdown reception that ranks as the fourth-longest in program history.
Kennedy finished as the Laker leader in several single-season categories, including receptions (75), receiving touchdowns (11), punt returns (29), punt return yards (501), and tied the punt return touchdown record (2). He enters his senior season seventh in school history in receiving yards (1,369), fifth in receptions (106), fourth in touchdown receptions (13), second in punt return yards (501), and 13th in all-purpose yards (2,017).
Joining Kennedy is sophomore
Terrence Coon (6-0, 191, Jamaica, NY/Holy Cross) who provided some highlight-reel material of his own last season as a freshman. He was an All-PSAC West Second Team selection and the ECAC Division II Freshman of the Year after finishing second on the team with 60 receptions for 885 yards and eight scores. He was first on the team among receivers by averaging 14.8 yards per catch.
Joining the dynamic duo for some playing time this season include junior
Paris Bruner (6-2, 200, Warren, OH/Warren G. Harding) and redshirt sophomore
Ozzie Lumpkin (6-1, 170, Buffalo, NY/St. Francis).
Bruner caught ten passes last season for 180 yards including a career-long 56-yard reception in the PSAC Championship. Seven of his ten receptions last season went for more than 10 yards.
Lumpkin appeared in seven games last season for the Lakers, primarily on special teams.
Keep an eye on incoming freshmen Tre' Rainey (6-1, 180, Orange Park, FL/Eagle's View),
Eddie Willis (6-3, 210, San Fernando, CA/Reseda), and
Devyn Woods (5-11, 175, Willoughby, OH/Willoughby South) to press for some playing time during camp.
