BOSTON - The Mercyhurst College women's hockey team saw its season come to an end Saturday afternoon, as the sixth-seeded Lakers fell to No. 3 Boston University, 4-2, in the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Tournament, held at Walter Brown Arena in Boston, Mass.
The Lakers, who qualified for the national tournament for the seventh straight time in program history, finish the 2010-11 season with a 29-6-0 record. The Terriers, meanwhile, improve to 26-6-4 and will face Cornell in the 2011 NCAA Women's Frozen Four Semifinals, held next weekend at Tullio Arena in Erie, Pa.
Senior captain
Meghan Agosta scored both goals for the Lakers, while senior assistant captain
Jesse Scanzano and sophomore
Samantha Watt each added an assist. Junior
Hillary Pattenden recorded 18 saves and allowed three goals.
Despite overcoming a pair of one-goal deficits in the game, the Lakers saw their chances at advancing to their third straight NCAA Women's Frozen Four fade in the third period, as the Terriers broke open a 2-2 game with consecutive goals in the final 10 minutes. Jill Cardella netted the eventual game-winner when she tipped in Tara Watchorn's shot on the doorstep at the 9:04 mark, while Jenn Wakefield added an empty-net score during a late comeback attempt by the Lakers in the final minute.
Prior to that stretch, both teams traded goals through the early portion of the game. Wakefield produced the Terriers with a 1-0 lead at 11:52 of the first period. On the rush, Kasey Boucher sent a pass up to Jillian Kirchner, who relayed it to Wakefield driving into Laker territory. She then took the puck along the boards and around the defense before backhanding it into the goal.
Shortly after, Agosta brought the Lakers back after Scanzano set her up from the right circle. In the middle of a scrum, Agosta took the pass in the slot and wristed it past BU neminder Kerrin Sperry with 3:57 showing on the clock.
BU accounted for the only goal in the middle stanza and took its second lead of the game, at 2-1, when Marie-Philip Poulin struck paydirt on a wrister from the right circle.
After the break, Agosta evened the slate again after a Terrier turnover in their own zone. On the power play, Agosta picked off the clearing attempt at the blueline and rifled it over the glove hand of Sperry with 11:44 remaining.
Mercyhurst held a 32-22 advantage in shots, including 15-4 in the first and 12-4 in the third. The Lakers also accounted for the game's only power-play goal, going 1-for-1 with the man advantage. The Terriers, on the other hand, finished 0-for-3.
