Agosta Becomes NCAA All-Time Leading Scorer in Win Over Wayne State

Box Score

ERIE, Pa. – Senior captain Meghan Agosta scored three goals and recorded one assist to become the all-time leading scorer in NCAA women's hockey history and help the No. 4/5 Mercyhurst College women's hockey team defeat College Hockey America opponent Wayne State, 6-2, on Friday evening at the Mercyhurst Ice Center.

Agosta's four points moved her career total to 286 and surpassed former Harvard forward and current U.S. Olympian Julie Chu's record of 285, set during the 2006-07 season.

“It's a great honor to break such a storied record,” said Agosta, who now owns the NCAA records for most points, short-handed goals and game-winning goals in a career. “None of this would have been possible without my teammates. I play hard every game to help my team succeed and bring an NCAA Championship to Mercyhurst.”

In a game that saw the Lakers (23-5-0, 12-0-0 CHA) trail for nearly 30 minutes, it was Agosta who put the them in position for the win before securing her place in history.

Down 1-0 in the second period, Agosta evened the slate at one when she ripped a shot from the top of the right circle past the stick side of goaltender Delayne Brian on the power play at 4:06. After another WSU score less than two minutes later, she tied the game again, this time on a cross-crease feed from senior assistant captain Vicki Bendus that she knocked in on the doorstep with nine seconds to play.

Within two points of becoming the top scorer in NCAA history, Agosta matched the record and broke it as the Lakers scored four goals over a span of three minutes and seven seconds in the third period.

She tied Chu's mark with the primary assist on senior assistant captain Jesse Scanzano's goal that made it a 4-2 game after Bendus put the Lakers ahead for the first time just 22 second prior. Then, after a strike from junior Bailey Bram at 5:52, Agosta made history by netting her 286th point on a fastbreak goal that saw her beat two WSU defensemen before depositing the puck to the far post with 13:07 to play.

By completing her 13th career hat trick at Mercyhurst, Agosta moved her career goal total to 149, just one shy of tying Harvard's Nicole Corriero for most goals in NCAA history.

Mercyhurst controlled the pace of the game despite not gaining the lead until early in the third period. The Lakers outshot the Warriors 57-14, including 30-4 in the second, and had seven power-play opportunities, two of which they converted for goals (2-for-7). Wayne State finished the game 0-for-6 on the power play.

Junior Hillary Pattenden recorded 12 saves to earn her 21st win of the season and 74th career at Mercyhurst. She is now tied with class of 2008 goaltender Laura Hosier for most wins in program history. Brian, meanwhile, stopped 51 shots in the loss.

Both teams close out the season series on Saturday, Feb. 5 at the Mercyhurst Ice Center.
