ERIE, Pa. – The Mercyhurst College Athletic Department announced today the winners of the 2009-2010 Sister Damien Cup -- congratulations to the softball team, who came in first place in this year’s competition. Field hockey took runner-up, and women’s soccer received third-place honors.

Beginning in the 2008-2009 seasons, the Sister Damien Cup is an award given to the team that exemplifies and embraces the initiatives of the CHAMPS/Life Skills program. The 24 Mercyhurst athletic teams compete against each other for the coveted award. Both teams and individuals can earn points for their team over the course of the year.

When tallying up team totals for the competition, many different aspects of being a “student-athlete” are taken into consideration. Teams receive points in Academic and Athletic Excellence, Personal/Career Development, Commitment to Service, Laker Spirit and the team’s attendance in the Student Athlete Advisory Board meetings.

Winning the Sister Damien Cup is a special honor that comes with a coveted prize. The winning teams receive an award that is to be deposited into their fundraising account. Winning first place is a $500 award, second place is a $250, and third place is a $100.
