Women's Lacrosse Honored for Academic Excellence

ERIE, Pa. – The Mercyhurst College women’s lacrosse team has been honored as an Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association Academic Squad, IWLCA officials announced on Friday.

Mercyhurst earned the honor for having a grade point average of 3.0 or greater during the 2010 season.

Lake Erie, Philadelphia and Dowling topped the list with the top-3 GPAs in NCAA Division II women’s lacrosse, while Bloomsburg, Mercy, Pfeiffer, New Haven and West Chester were recognized as Academic Squads.

This is the fifth time in the past six seasons the Lakers were honored as an Academic Squad.

In addition to the the team being named as an Academic Squad, recent graduate Celeste Shefferly was also named to the IWLCA Academic Honor Roll for having a 3.317 GPA in pursuit of a degree in intelligence studies with a minor in Russian.

In other women’s lacrosse news, the Canadian Lacrosse Association recently announced that incoming Mercyhurst freshman Samantha Cock has been named to Canadian National Women’s Under-19 Team.

Cock, along with 23 other players, will look to make the final 18-player roster that will compete at the Federation of International Lacrosse U-19 World Championships in Hannover, Germany next summer.
