Editor's note: This is the ninth of 10 features that highlight a group or position of the 2010 Mercyhurst College football team.
Quarterbacks
Garrett Kensy returns for his final season as a Laker, this time as the front runner at quarterback after last year’s starter Joe Laffey decided to forego his final season of eligibility. Kensy spent the 2009
season with the special teams unit and at wide receiver, coming on strong late in the season to finish fifth on the team with 10 catches for 101 yards and two touchdowns.
This will be Kensy’s second stint as Mercyhurst’s quarterback. He stepped into the starring role in 2008 after Laffey suffered a season-ending hand injury in the opener. In that role, Kensy engineered a Mercyhurst aerial attack that provided balance to the thrilling ground performance by Stokes. He posted seven games with over 100 yards passing and hit five or more receivers in eight games.
He finished the 2008 season with 111 completions in 201 attempts for 1,276 yards and had just seven interceptions on the year. Kensy posted two games with multiple passing touchdowns while adding a career-best 223 yards passing against California. Consistent to all receivers, Kensy hit four different receivers in every game and hit five or more in every game but two.
Red-shirt junior
Travis Rearick will push Kensy for the starting role. Rearick saw limited action a
season ago, completing 16 passes for 154 yards and one touchdown. His role will be more traditional, relying on his strengths to pass efficiently and with great timing, whereas Kensy is more versatile and brings the ability to run effectively out of the pocket.
Looking to gain experience at the position will be red-shirt freshmen
Chad Tibbitts and
Anthony Vendemia.
