BRIDGEPORT, Pa. – Six members of the Mercyhurst College women’s water polo team have been named to the Collegiate Water Polo Association Scholar-Athlete Team, CWPA officials announced Tuesday.

Overall, 304 student-athletes from varsity and club programs were honored by the CWPA, exceeding the mark of 153 players recognized in 2009.

When honored, student-athletes fall into three categories for the academic awards: Outstanding, Superior and Excellent.

Those named to the Outstanding level have earned a cumulative grade point average of 3.71 or higher while the Superior level hosts those with a GPA between 3.41 – 3.7 and the Excellent classification honors those who have earned between a 3.2 and a 3.4 cumulative GPA.

Two Lakers in Jessica Clemente and Chrissy Becks received Outstanding honors while three Lakers in Hope Rozelle, Cathi Korenich and Kylie McCormick each earned Superior status. Nicole Nelson rounded out the Mercyhurst honorees with an Excellent status.

Sophomore driver Clemente owns a 4.0 GPA as a biochemistry major, and Becks, a junior drive, boasts a 3.99 as an athletic training major.

Rozelle is undeclared in her major but has posted a 3.69 GPA in her two seasons as a goalie with the team. Another goalie, Korenich posted a 3.59 GPA while pursuing an accounting degree. McCormick, a freshman utility player who plans to major in history, posted a 3.47 GPA in her first year with the team while junior driver Nelson achieved a 3.29 GPA in health fitness.
