ERIE, Pa. – Six Mercyhurst College women’s water polo players have earned academic awards from the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches, as announced by the organization Tuesday afternoon.

Additionally, the Lakers finished the 2009-10 academic year with a 3.2 cumulative team grade point average, the 10th-highest among the 25 institutions honored by the ACWPC.

Two Lakers in Jessica Clemente and Chrissy Becks received Outstanding honors while three Lakers in Hope Rozelle, Cathi Korenich and Kylie McCormick each earned Superior status. Nicole Nelson rounded out the Mercyhurst honorees with an Excellent status.

When honored as individual, student-athletes fall into three categories for the academic awards: Outstanding, Superior and Excellent.

Those named to the Outstanding level have earned a cumulative grade point average of 3.71 or higher while the Superior level hosts those with a GPA between 3.41 – 3.7 and the Excellent classification honors those who have earned between a 3.2 and a 3.4 cumulative GPA.

Sophomore driver Clemente owns a 4.0 GPA as a biochemistry major, and Becks, a junior drive, boasts a 3.99 as an athletic training major.

Rozelle is undeclared in her major but has posted a 3.69 GPA in her two seasons as a goalie with the team. Another goalie, Korenich is a four-time ACWPC academic honoree, posting a 3.59 GPA while pursuing an accounting degree. McCormick, a freshman utility player who plans to major in history, posted a 3.47 GPA in her first year with the team while junior driver Nelson earns her second accolade with a 3.29 GPA in health fitness.
