ERIE, Pa. -- Seniors
Mike Sullivan and
Andy Lamancusa headlined the annual Mercyhurst College wrestling banquet on Sunday at the Ambassador Banquet and Conference Center.
The two seniors were honored and recognized for their four-year careers in addition to the team awards presentations.
Lamancusa, a top-three finalist for the Mercyhurst College Male Student-Athlete of the Year, was named the team's Most Outstanding Wrestler along with
Josh Shields. At the 2010 NCAA II National Championships, Lamancusa placed third and earned All-America status for the third time in his career. Meanwhile, Shields competed in the national final for the second consecutive year, taking second this season after capturing the 2009 National Championship for his third All-America certificate.
Eric Lundgren was named the team's Most Improved Wrestler as the red-shirt freshman posted an 11-17 overall mark, going 2-2 at the regional tournament.
Sophomore
Fred Hale earned the Rookie of the Year award, competing in his first season of wrestling since his scholastic career. The three-year veteran of the Lakers' football squad recorded a 17-13 mark, earning the third seed in the regional tournament before going 2-2 after a knee injury.
The team's academic award went to freshman Tony D'Urso, a pharmacy major from Greenville, Pa.
Five wrestlers in Lamancusa, Shields,
Jordan Shields,
Pat Leahy and
Pat Carter also previously earned All-Acadmic honors from the National Wrestling Coaches Association.
