Lakers Earn Four All-Region Selections

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Four members of the seventh-ranked Mercyhurst College women’s lacrosse team have been named to the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association South Region First Team, IWLCA officials announced Thursday evening.

Senior Maeve McGoff, juniors Kimberly Masterton and Maggie Yackel, and sophomore Ally Keirn were all tabbed as first-team performers for helping the Lakers to a 16-2 record and a spot in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Women’s Lacrosse Tournament.

Overall, 64 student-athletes were honored for their play against NCAA Division II competition. These athletes are now eligible for inclusion on the IWLCA / US Lacrosse All-American teams, which will be announced on May 25.

McGoff, a goalkeeper from Terrace Park, Ohio, makes her first appearance on the IWLCA All-Region squad after leading the Lakers to a 16-2 record in 2010. She recorded an 8.70 goals against average and a .513 save percentage by turning aside 121 of the 291 shots faced, including 10 or more on five different occasions.

Masterton, a repeat first-team performer, led the team in goals (50) and ranked second in overall scoring (84) through 18 games played. The Penfield, N.Y., product and Laker midfielder tallied at least two points in each of the team’s 18 games and marked five or more in nine contests. She also tied for the team-lead in caused turnovers with 23.

Yackel, a second-team selection in 2009, helped anchor a Laker defense that allowed just under nine goals a game (8.72). Through 16 games the Camilus, N.Y., native recorded 36 ground balls and caused 23 turnovers at defense, including three or more on five different occasions.

Keirn, an attacker from Henrietta, N.Y., led the Lakers and the conference with 104 points. She scored 47 goals and added 57 assists, setting a new school-record for points in a season. Additionally, she added a team-leading 39 ground balls and captured 20 draw controls.
