Brian Scheetz and junior
Zach Nash highlighted a list of seven Mercyhurst College men's lacrosse players honored Wednesday afternoon as All-East Coast Conference selections.
Scheetz was named ECC Rookie of the Year and a second-team honoree, while Nash was tabbed ECC Goalkeeper of the Year, a designation awarded to the goalie that earned All-ECC First Team honors.
Overall, the Lakers earned nine honors with two major award winners and seven all-conference selections.
Seniors
Tyler Burton (midfield) and
Chris Eline (defense) joined Nash on the first team, while Scheetz (attack) highlighted Mercyhurst on the second team. Senior
Michael Sciulli (attack), junior
Kevin Coholan (midfield) and sophomore
Gregory Bensman (longstick middie) all landed spots on the honorable mention squad.
Burton, a native of London, Ontario, ranked third on the team in scoring this season, netting 26 goals and adding 12 assists for 38 points. He scored three game-winning goals and found the back of the net five times on man-up situations. In addition to his offensive statistics, Burton added 18 ground balls and four caused turnovers.
Eline was part of a defensive unit that limited opponents to a nation-low 5.52 goals per game. Starting in 12 of 14 games played this season, the Jarrettsville, Md., native recorded 21 ground balls and caused 12 turnovers.
Nash, a Rochester, N.Y., product, led Mercyhurst to its best season since 2007. In his first season as the team's starting goalkeeper, Nash recorded an 11-1 record with a .597 save percentage and a 5.94 goals against average. He made double-digit saves in three games this season, with 17 in a 12-8 win over New York Tech and 16 in an 11-8 victory over Dowling.
Scheetz led the Lakers in scoring with 31 goals and 30 assists for 61 points. The Canandaigua, N.Y., native emerged as the Lakers' top scorer from day one, netting three goals and three assists in his first collegiate game. He followed that performance with five games of three or more points, including a two-goal, four-assist performance against Seton Hill, before exploding for four goals and four assists in the season finale against Dominican (N.Y.). Scheetz also added 22 ground balls and two caused turnovers.
Sciulli, a Pittsburgh, Pa. native, ranked second on the team in scoring with 22 goals and 18 assists for 40 points. He recorded at least one point in every game this season and three or more points in eight games, including a season-high seven points with three goals and four assists in a 16-7 win over Seton Hill. Along with his scoring stats, Sciulli picked up 32 ground balls to rank third on the team and first among attackmen.
Coholan, a transfer from the University of Maryland – Baltimore County, placed fourth on the team in scoring with 23 goals and 35 points. A Rochester, N.Y., native, Coholan also marked a point in every game this season, highlighted by a five-goal, two-assist performance against Wingate and a four-goal, one-assist outing against then-No. 3 C.W. Post. He finished the year with 14 ground balls and two caused turnovers.
Bensman rounded out the Mercyhurst selections as the longstick midfielder on the honorable mention squad. Missing most of last year due to injury, Bensman emerged as one of the Lakers' top defenders this season, leading the squad in caused turnovers (14) and ranking second in ground balls (38). He also added three goals and assisted on three others for six points.
