ATHENS, Ohio – The No. 2 Mercyhurst women’s varsity eight earned a second-place finish in the 46th annual Mid America Collegiate Rowing Association Championships (MACRA) in Athens, Ohio. Two additional boats entered by the women’s program brought home titles.
Mercyhurst rowing claimed second place in the overall combined team points standings out of 15 teams entered. Grand Valley State earned first place, followed by Mercyhurst and Ohio State in that order.
The Lakers’ women’s pair, consisting of
Annie Schiller at bow and
Leah Niecgorski at stroke, took home the championship in its classificationm in a time of 8:37, besting Grand Valley State by 15 seconds and defeating Lawrence by 22 seconds..
Mercyhurst’s women’s varsity four (
Alexandra Salen, Racel Beste,
Bethany Brun,
Amanda Carlyon and coxswain Holly Ansaldi) finished in first place overall, clocking 7:47 while holding off the University of Chicago (7:54) and Northwestern (7:57).
The second-ranked women’s varsity eight (
Annie Schiller,
Alexandra Salen,
Rachel Beste,
Sally O’Brien,
Bethany Brun,
Alicia Peterson,
Leah Niecgorski,
Amanda Carlyon, and coxswain
Lindsey Crosby) placed second to Grand Valley State. GVSU won in a time of 6:38, followed by Mercyhurst at 6:45 and the University of Chicago in 7:17.
The MACRA marked the final regular-season regatta for the Lakers this season. Mercyhurst will compete at the Dad Vail Regatta Friday, May 7 and Saturday, May 8, as the women’s rowing team will be vying for NCAA qualification.
The seeding for the Dad Vail is expected out by Tuesday.
