ERIE, Pa. – The Mercyhurst College football team will open spring football drills on Monday, April 5.

Head coach Marty Schaetzle will put his Lakers through 15 practices, culminating in the Lakers annual spring game held on May 1. Schaetzle will enter his ninth-year at the helm of the Mercyhurst program, tying current athletics director Joe Kimball as the longest-serving head coach in Lakers’ history.

The spring practice schedule also will include an Alumni Day on Saturday, April 24. For more information on Alumni Day events, please contact assistant Coach Jeff Gutowski at jgutowski@mercyhurst.edu or 814.824.2230

Schaetzle has led Mercyhurst to a 31-55 record in his stay. A year ago, the Lakers went 4-7 overall, 3-4 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division. Mercyhurst went head-to-head with some of the best talents in Division II, including a 20-16 win over then-ranked No. 21 IUP. The Lakers also played tough against then-ranked No. 5 Bloomsburg before dropping a 17-7 decision.

The Lakers are on track to be one of the most dominant teams in the PSAC West, having gone 7-4 overall in 2008, Mercyhurst’s first year as a full-time member of the league after ending a 13-year affiliate with the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

The Lakers look to continue their success in 2010 as Mercyhurst celebrates its 30th season on the gridiron. Mercyhurst is tentatively scheduled to open the 2010 season with three road games, beginning Thursday, Aug. 28 at Notre Dame College (Ohio), followed by Sept. 11 at Kutztown and C.W. Post on Sept. 18.

The Lakers then return home for the PSAC West opener against Lock Haven on Sept. 25 before taking to the road for three more consecutive road games. Mercyhurst will conclude its third year in the PSAC with four straight home games.
