OMAHA, Neb. -- At the 2010 NCAA II Wrestling National Championships hosted by the Univ. of Nebraska-Omaha,
Josh Shields advanced to the quarterfinals while
Andy Lamancusa will battle in the consolation rounds this evening after falling in the opening match.
At 165 lbs., defending national champion and two-time All-American Shields cruised to a 4-0 victory over Austin Grant of Colorado State-Pueblo, amassing nearly two and a half minutes of riding time in the match. The junior opened with scoring early, then held on for the final period in which he did not allow Grant to get in an offensive position for a majority of the final stanza.
Shields extends his winning-streak to 19 matches and is now 35-3 on the year. He is two victories away from tying the Lakers' single-season victories mark set by Lamancusa a year ago. Additionally, he now is 87-16 for his career, one win away from tying J.J. Zanetta's mark of 88 for seventh-place on the all-time list.
At 157 lbs., two-time All-American Lamancusa faced a first-time national qualifier in Marcus Edgington of Augustana College. Edgington, who wrestled at 165 lbs. last year, was the Super Region 3 champion this season and entered the match with a 30-4 record.
Edgington posted a first period takedown which Lamancusa countered with an escape. Then in the second, it was Lamancusa who added the takedown before Edgington posted singles.
Lamancusa rallied with an escape in the final period to knot the score at 4-4 and nearly pulled out a takedown in the final seconds but could not close out the move, forcing the match into overtime. There, Edgington registered a takedown in front of his corner for the win.
Lamancusa is now 34-10 on the season, 114-45 in his career.
Complete brackets will be posted as soon as they are made available by the NCAA.
