LOCK HAVEN, Pa. -- Mercyhurst College junior
Josh Shields has been tabbed the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Wrestler of the Week for the period ending Feb. 28.
Shields put forth an impressive effort to go 4-0 and was crowned the champion of the 165-pound bracket at the 2010 NCAA Super Region I Tournament, successfully defending his title from a year ago.
The nation's top-ranked wrestler did not surrender a point in the tournament en route to the title, picking up a fall in the quarterfinals before adding a 10-0 major decision over Gannon's Brett Terry in the semifinals. The defending national champion then added a 7-0 decision in the finals over sixth-seeded Jason Varilek of Belmont Abbey.
The perfect 4-0 week makes his record 34-3 on the season and extends his win-streak to 18 matches, He has yet to lose to a competitor in Division II as he prepares for the NCAA II National Championship, March 12-13 at Nebraska-Omaha. Through the month of February Shields has tore through his last nine matches, outscoring his opponents by a score of 51-9.
This is the second PSAC weekly honor for Shields, who also was named PSAC Co-Wrestler of the Week on Nov. 17.
