ERIE, Pa. – Joe Lombardi, the quarterbacks coach for the Super Bowl XLIV Champion New Orleans Saints, spent four years as the offensive coordinator at Mercyhurst College before making the leap to the National Football League.
Grandson of the legendary Vince Lombardi and a 1994 graduate of the United States Air Force Academy, Lombardi was hired as the offensive coordinator by current head coach
Marty Schaetzle in 2002 and remained at the ‘Hurst until 2005.
“I was happy for him and his family,” said Schaetzle. “Since knowing him, he has proven to have all the qualities of a very successful football coach.”
The two were connected previously while on staff at Bucknell University where Lombardi served as the defensive line/strength & conditioning coach and Schaetzle the offensive coordinator/offensive line coach.
Lombardi has been with the Saints since 2007 and before that was with the Atlanta Falcons in 2006. Prior to his stint at Mercyhurst, Lombardi served as running backs/tight end coach for the New York/New Jersey Hitmen of the XFL.
