Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. – The Mercyhurst College softball team dropped both games of a double-header at Palm Beach Atlantic Saturday, Feb. 27. The Sailfish downed the Lakers 6-0 in the first game before pulling away for an 8-2 victory in game two.

With the two setbacks, the Lakers are now 3-8 on the season, while the Sailfish hold a 10-4 record.

For the double-header, Michelle Schmitz hit two doubles, while Jen Bower added a double and Amber Rapose belted a two-run triple.

Palm Beach Atlantic registered three runs during each of the first two innings of game one, and the 6-0 score held as the final margin. The Lakers threatened in the fourth inning when Andrea Sauers reached on an error, and Bower hit a double. The rally was derailed, as Bower was thrown out.

Kristi Janoske went the distance for the Lakers, allowing five earned runs on seven hits. Ashley Jones earned the shutout win, giving up three hits.

The Sailfish pushed three runs across in the bottom of the third inning, but Mercyhurst answered with a pair in the top of the fourth, pulling to within one at 3-2. Schmitz doubled, and Emily Redig singled, setting the table for Rapose, who tripled in both Schmitz and Redig.

PBA extended its lead to six with two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and three in the sixth, prevailing 8-2.

Amanda Norman suffered the loss, surrendering eight runs on 12 hits in five and two-thirds innings. Heather Laird allowed two runs on three hits, striking out eight batters in the victory.

Mercyhurst split a double-header Friday at Northwood (Fla.), falling 2-1 and defeating the Seahawks 12-1 in six innings. More information will be posted as available.

The Lakers conclude their Spring Break trip in Fla. with a twinbill Monday, March 1 at Ave Maria. Ave Maria held a 6-15 record going into Saturday’s action.
