Women's Hockey Falls to St. Lawrence, 6-2

CANTON, N.Y. – The third-ranked Mercyhurst College women's hockey team saw its five-game winning streak come to an end as St. Lawrence skated to a 6-2 victory over the Lakers on Friday evening at Appleton Arena. With the loss, the Lakers fall to 12-3-0 on the season and suffer their first setback since early November.

St. Lawrence defeated the Lakers for the first time in six attempts behind a five-goal run through the first 25 minutes of play. The Saints built a 3-0 lead in the first period before chipping in two more to start the second.

Mercyhurst cut the deficit to three with back-to-back goals less than a minute apart nearing the end of the period. Senior captain Meghan Agosta got the visitors on the board when she took a pass from senior assistant captain Jesse Scanzano and beat Maxie Weisz on the power play at 18:16.  Shortly after, junior Bailey Bram made it a 5-2 game off a pass from Agosta at the 18:59 mark.

Despite the late rush, the Saints would hold the Lakers scoreless for the remainder of the game while tacking on a sixth goal with under five minutes to play.

The six goals marked the most allowed to an opponent since a 7-3 setback to Providence Jan. 12, 2008.

Junior Hillary Pattenden suffered the loss with 11 saves through 24 minutes and two seconds worth of action. Sophomore Stephanie Ciampa came in relief and recorded 13 stops and surrendered one goal over the remaining 35:58.

St. Lawrence finished the game with a 30-28 advantage in shots and went 2-for-9 on the power play. Mercyhurst converted one of its four opportunities with the man-advantage.

Both teams close out the two-game series at Appleton Arena on Saturday, Dec. 11 at 3 p.m.
