Lakers Roll Past Huskies to Sweep Series

ERIE, Pa. – The third-ranked Mercyhurst College women's hockey team completed the series sweep of St. Cloud State Saturday afternoon, downing the Huskies by a score of 6-1 at the Mercyhurst Ice Center.

The Lakers (2-0-0) continued to score early and often with four goals in the first period and two more in the second. The balanced offense also continued, as six different players contributed tallies, including senior captain Meghan Agosta, who led the offense with her second three-point outing of the season.

Seniors Vicki Bendus and Melissa Lacroix both added two points to the stat sheet, with Bendus scoring once and assisting on another and Lacroix dishing out two helpers. Senior Jesse Scanzano, juniors Bailey Bram and Kelley Steadman, and freshman Christie Cicero each netted a goal as the Lakers totaled 15 goals in a two-game series for the first time since scoring 16 in a series against Colgate last season.

It was all Mercyhurst early on as the Lakers peppered Husky netminder Tayler VanDenakker with 17 shots in the first period alone.

Scanzano opened the scoring when she took a homerun pass from Bendus and beat the netminder on a one-on-one opportunity at 16:28. Bram followed suit just under six minutes later, knocking in a puck on the doorstep with 10:31 showing. Bendus then gave the Lakers a 3-0 advantage at 5:15 mark, while Steadman closed out the frame with a top-shelf shot over the goalie's shoulder with 1:05 to play.

The Lakers tacked in two more goals sandwiched around an SCSU score to close out the game in the second. Agosta stretched the lead to 5-0 with a great individual effort, skating through three St. Cloud State players before putting the puck in the back of the net at 7:24. After the Huskies struck at 3:22, Cicero restored the five-goal lead off an assist from linemate Agosta at 3:02.

With the exception of the third period, the Lakers controlled the pace of the game with a 36-20 advantage in shots and held the Huskies scoreless on five power-play opportunities. Mercyhurst finished the game 0-for-1 with the extra skater.

Junior Hillary Pattenden moved her record to 2-0-0 with 19 saves while counterpart VanDenakker suffered the loss with 30 stops. She falls to 0-1-0 on the season.

Mercyhurst continues non-conference play next weekend with a two-game series at Maine, beginning on Saturday, Oct. 9, at 1 p.m.
