ERIE, Pa. -- Mercyhurst picked up back-to-back major decisions from
Andy Lamancusa and
Josh Shields but No. 5 Gannon took three out of the first four matches by fall en route to a 31-14 win on Saturday.
The loss drops the Lakers to 4-9 overall while the Golden Knights improved to 4-3 in dual meets.
The Golden Knights built a comfortable 22-0 lead through the first four matches as John Fleming pinned
John Worthington at 125 lbs to start the meet before Corey Bowers pinned
David Bolger. A.J. Milanek added to the Golden Knights total with a 13-2 major decision over
Tony D'Urso and Kevin McElhaney closed out with a pin against
Robert Blotzer.
The Lakers pounded back with major decisions by Andy Lamancuse and
Josh Shields at 157 and 165 lbs, respectively, but Mercyhurst would win just once more at 197 lbs.
Lamancusa improves to 26-7 on the year and 106-42 for his career, overtaking second-place on the Lakers all-time chart and surpassing Justin Mautz. He now needs four wins to become Mercyhurst's all-time leader and break Zack Schafer's mark of 109 victories.
Shields improves to 25-3 on the season and 77-16 for his career. The defending national champion at 165 lbs. needs one more win to tie Will Tedder for 10th all-time in victories.
