Erie, Pa. –
Karla Vogt's left-footed shot from 18 yards out with 26 seconds remaining gave the Mercyhurst women's soccer team a 1-0 win over cross town rival Gannon Wednesday at Mercyhurst Soccer Field. The victory was the 300th in the history of Mercyhurst women's soccer.
With the game appearing to be headed into overtime, Gannon turned the ball over deep in their own end in the 90th minute. Mercyhurst's
Jamie Schroter gained possession, then passed the ball toward the 18-yard box. Freshman
Danielle Braun won a challenge, and dropped the ball off for Vogt's shot which sailed over keeper Sabrina Chirco while finding the upper portion of the net for a 1-0 Laker lead with just 26 second left in the match. Despite a late Gannon flurry, the Lakers held on for the victory.
Vogt's goal was her first on the season, but continued a string of clutch goals for the senior midfielder. She notched two game-winning tallies in the 2008 postseason, including the game's lone goal in the Lakers' 1-0 win over West Chester Nov. 21 in the NCAA Atlantic Region Final.
Mercyhurst controlled play throughout a majority of the contest, but Gannon had the first quality scoring chance of the second half. In the 52nd minute, Katie Urban sent a corner kick into the area, where Kara Prokopchak headed it toward the Laker net. Keeper
Amanda John made the stop, and Mercyhurst cleared the ball from danger. The Lakers recorded the last six shot attempts of the match, finally breaking through in the last minute of play.
The Lakers spent a majority of the first half in the Gannon half of the field, possessing the ball with efficiency while generating chances at goal. Mercyhurst's defense kept top strikers Tenyka Francique and Amanda Sharbaugh at bay throughout the contest, limiting their space. Nine Laker shots were fired, including four shots on goal which Sabrina Chirco denied.
Amanda John made one save in the first half.
For the match, John made four saves for her first career shutout victory. Chirco stopped seven shots in the loss.
For the game, the Lakers outshot Gannon 18-10, including an 8-4 edge in shots on target, as the Mercyhurst defense did not allow the Golden Knights to achieve much buildup in the attacking third. Gannon attempted six corner kicks to the Lakers' four.
With the win, the Lakers are now 1-2 on the season, with a 1-0 mark in the PSAC Western Division. The Golden Knights, who received votes in the most recent NSCAA national poll, are now 1-1, 0-1 in the PSAC West.
Braun's assist gives her a team-leading three points on the season. Many Lakers contributed to the offensive attack.
Taylor Hilinski attempted four shots, three on target, and
Jamie Schroter took six shots.
The Lakers continued their undefeated series record over Gannon, beating the Golden Knights for the 22nd time out of 26 matches, with the other four contests ending in a draw. The last three meetings between the two sides had ended in a tie before Wednesday's 1-0 Mercyhurst victory.
Today's achievement of the 300th victory in program history came in the Lakers' 418th game all-time. The team's winning percentage stands at .749 for the balance of the team's existence.
Mercyhurst continues its PSAC West slate of games Sunday, hosting Lock Haven at 1 p.m. The Lady Eagles downed the Lakers 2-1 in overtime in their last meeting in 2008.
