GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas -- Mercyhurst College student and baseball alumnus Jonathan Dziomba has signed with the Grand Prairie AirHogs of the American Association of Independent Baseball.
The infielder made his professional debut yesterday (July 12), helping the AirHogs to a 7-1 victory over the Fort Worth Cats. Starting at second base, Dziomba posted a 3-for-4 performance, including an RBI and run scored.
Dziomba is expected to be in the lineup again tonight as the AirHogs host the Cats at 7:05 p.m. Fans can listen to the broadcast by clicking here.
The Williamsville, N.Y. native is the third Laker this season to sign a professional contract, following Jamie Walczak and Steve Grife. Walczak was selected in the 2009 MLB Draft by the Cincinnati Reds in the 15th round as the 449th overall pick while Grife was drafted by the Chicago Cubs in the 26th round with the 800th pick.
Minor League Updates:
Walczak has made four appearances for the Billings Mustangs, collecting an 0-2 record with a 12.60 ERA in five innings of work. Grife has yet to appear for the Boise, Idaho affiliate.
David Lough, a 2007 draft selection of the Kansas City Royals in the 11th round (336th overall), is hitting .333 through nine games with the Northwestern Arkansas Naturals after his promotion from the A-Advanced Wilmington Blue Rocks. Lough's promotion followed his selection to the California-Carolinas League All-Star Game.
