Erie, Pa. – Three players from the third-ranked Mercyhurst College men’s lacrosse team were honored Tuesday morning as the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association announced its year-end awards and selections for the 68th Annual USILA North/South All-Star game.
Seniors
Jason LaShomb and
Matt Spahr were named USILA Second Team All-Americans for leading the Lakers at their respective positions. In addition, both players will join senior
Mike Thon as the Lakers' first-ever representatives on the South roster at the North/South game.
LaShomb, a goalkeeper from Rush, N.Y., earns his third-career All-America honor after finishing the year 11-3, with a 6.50 goals against average and a .612 save percentage. The 2009 East Coast Conference Goalkeeper of the Year registered seven games of 10 or more saves and posted 14 stops on two different occasions. In the last the game of season, LaShomb stopped 12 shots and allowed just five goals to stun then-No. 3 New York Tech, 6-5.
Spahr, a defenseman from Media, Pa., makes his second appearance on the second team. Despite playing in eight games due to injury, Spahr made the most of his time, picking up 18 ground balls and causing 15 turnovers. He also scored two goals in an 8-7 victory over Dowling back on March 25.
Thon, a midfielder from Penfield, N.Y., provided the Lakers with 16 goals and seven assists through 13 games and won 78 of 144 faceoffs taken. His .542 win percentage ranked first among players taking at least 20 attempts.
The 68th Annual USILA North/South All-Star game will take place at Harvard Stadium on Friday, May 22 as part of a tripleheader. The Division III game will be played at 2 p.m. and the Division I/II game will be played at 4 p.m. followed by the Boston Cannons game vs. the Denver Outlaws at 7:30 p.m. Tickets for all three games are available by calling the Cannons ticket office at 617-746-9933 or by visiting www.bostoncannons.com.
