Erie, Pa. – Sophomore
Rachel Griepsma of the Mercyhurst College women’s water polo team has been named Collegiate Water Polo Association Western Division Co-Player of the Week for the week of April 6, announced Monday evening by CWPA officials. Griepsma, the 2008 CWPA West Rookie of the Year, shares the honor with Alicia Sutton of Washington & Jefferson.
The Lindsay, Ontario native led the Lakers to a 1-1 record this past weekend, scoring nine goals and adding an assist against No. 19 Indiana and cross-town rival Gannon. She scored five goals in an 11-7 setback to the nationally-ranked Hoosiers before equaling the point performance with four goals and a helper in a 10-4 victory over the Golden Knights. Griepsma currently leads the Lakers with 45 goals and 51 points.
With the win over Gannon, the Lakers secured the third-seed in the upcoming CWPA Western Division Championship, held in two weeks on the campus of Indiana University. Mercyhurst will take on No. 6 Washington and Jefferson on Saturday, April 18, at 1:30 p.m.
