ERIE, Pa. -- The Mercyhurst College softball team took two from local rival and PSAC West opponent Edinboro on Tuesday afternoon, winning Game 1 by a 10-1 margin before rallying to post a 5-4 victory in the nightcap.
Mercyhurst improves to 12-13 overall, 2-2 in the Western Division while Edinboro falls to 19-14, 2-4 against the PSAC West.
In Game 1, the Lakers held the Fighting Scots to just two hits while banging out 11 en route to a six-inning shortened game.
Elizabeth Maier led the offense with a 3-for-4 performance and two runs scored while
Emily Redig contributed a 2-for-3 effort with one run scored and three RBI. Also connecting for multiple hits was
Michelle Schmitz, who went 2-for-2 with a run scored and two RBI.
Amanda Norman improved to 5-6 on the year, scattering two hits for one earned run while striking out eight Edinboro batters.
The Fighting Scots
Dana Webb collected both of Edinboro's hits, including a homer in the bottom of the first.
In Game 2, the Lakers and Fighting Scots were tied at 4-4 entering the bottom of the seventh before Maier singled to left field to start the rally, then advanced to second on an
error by Edinboro's leftfielder. After Maier stole third base, she scampered home on
Megan Houston's game-winning single to centerfield.
Mercyhurst scored first in the contest, pushing a run across in the bottom of the third, only to see Edinboro counter with two runs in the fourth and fifth for a 4-1 lead.
Amber Rapose blasted a three-run homer in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game.
Laker starater
Kristi Janoske went five innings, giving up four unearned runs on four hits before Norman came on in relief and picked up the victory.
Next up for Mercyhurst is a doubleheader at Slippery Rock on Friday, April 3.
