ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The Lakers posted an 8-3 victory over Division I Villanova at the Michigan Wolverine Invitational this weekend to win their first contest of the season.
Mercyhurst erupted for five goals in the third quarter against the Wildcats and received four goals from
Chrissy Genian and three goals from
Rachel Griepsma to lead the the Lakers attack.
Hope Rozelle posted nine saves in the victory.
The Lakers also took on four other opponents in the tournament, dropping a 13-5 league matchup against host Michigan before falling in a tightly contested 6-5 loss to Sienna. Mercyhurst rounded out the northern swing with a 9-5 setback to Marist and a 8-4 loss against Iona.
Griepsma led the team with 12 goals while Genian added six goals.
Chrissy Becks and Nikki Nelson contributed a shared-team high three assists while Rozelle finished the weekend with 50 saves.
Mercyhurst is next in action on March 21 when the Lakers travel to Washington & Jefferson for a league matchup.
