Mercyhurst Heads to ECHL Championship Game vs # 8 RMU
The 2009 Eastern Collegiate Hockey League (ECHL) Championship game will see the #19 Mercyhurst Lakers take on the #8 seed Robert Morris Colonials this Saturday February 21st at 5pm in Rochester, New York.
Mercyhurst has had to overcome illness, injury and a shorter than normal bench in order to get past two strong teams from Niagara and Suny Canton by scores of 4-0 and 3-2 respectively. They will now face their toughest challenge yet against the #8 seed in the nation from Robert Morris University in the championship game of the ECHL playoffs. The Colonials, having secured a first round bye, defeated the University at Buffalo 6-1 in the semi-finals for the right to defend their ECHL championship.
Several Mercyhurst players were honored at the ECHL league ceremony as academic league all-stars and several others secured all-rookie nominations. Freshman Cody Steele (Calgary, AB) has led the way for the Lakers being named the ECHL Rookie of the Year and scoring both game winning goals in their wins over Niagara and Suny Canton.
