TOWSON, Md. – Mercyhurst College linebacker
Bryan Boyce has been named to the CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Football Second Team, as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
The Academic All-America team, sponsored by ESPN The Magazine and CoSIDA, honors student-athletes who have excelled in both the classroom and on the athletic field. In order to be considered for the honor, student-athletes must hold a cumulative grade point average of 3.3 or higher and be in at least their sophomore year of college.
For Boyce, this is the second honor of his career after earning a First Team selection a year ago, becoming the first Mercyhurst player to earn the award since Tim Brediger made honorable mention in 1998.
Boyce also makes history with the selection, becoming the first Mercyhurst men’s student-athlete in any sport to be named an Academic All-American more than once.
A graduate student, Boyce (Hubbard, Ohio/Hubbard) owns a 3.83 in biology. He has started 26 contests in his career and ranks tied for 19th with 211 total stops. In 2009, Boyce missed the first three contests because of injury but came back to finish seventh on the squad with 41 tackles, including a tackle for loss in five of his first six contests.
Mercyhurst finished the season 4-7 but played solid against nationally-ranked teams, including a 20-16 upset of then-ranked No. 21 Indiana (Pa.).
