Pittsburgh, Pa. - The Mercyhurst rowing teams opened their fall season at the 23rd Head of the Ohio, held Saturday, Oct. 3 in Pittsburgh, Pa. The 2.6 mile race course runs along the Allegheny River through downtown Pittsburgh finishing at Heinz Field.
The men’s varsity lightweight eight wasted no time in putting their mark on the competition, winning the race in 13:24, 21 seconds ahead of second place Marietta College. The women’s varsity eight finished fifth behind Division I teams W. Va., Va. Tech and Duquesne. The men’s varsity eight finished seventh in its race, while the freshmen four place second behind Marietta College.
High winds and rough water conditions caused the cancellation of several races Saturday.

The Lakers will be back in action Sunday, Oct. 11 when they compete at the Head of the Genesee in Rochester, N.Y.
