Lakers Capture Fourth Place on Both Sides at Slippery Rock

Slippery Rock, Pa. – Junior Christie Turak won the women’s 6K cross country race at the Slippery Rock Invitational, held Saturday, Oct. 3 at Coopers Lakes Campground. Turak helped the Lakers to a fourth place finish out of a nine-team field. The Mercyhurst men’s cross country team placed fourth out of eight teams at the SRU Invite.

Turak posted a time of 21:53 over the 6K course, besting second place finisher Jen Harpp of SRU by nearly 40 seconds. Turak has now beaten all but one runner in the four races in which she has run. Junior Jennifer Mieczkowski placed 16th out of 112 finishers with a time of 24:34. Junior Cherie Jackson took 29th place in 25:44, while Rebecca Roberts ran a 25:57 for 34th position. Junior Clara Strasenburgh completed team scoring with a 54th-place finish in 27:05.

The women’s team posted a score of 114, good for fourth place. Slippery Rock won the meet with a score of 36, followed by Penn State’s club team (70), Wayne State (83) and Mercyhurst in the top four.

Junior Tomas Bolger paced the men’s team to a fourth-place finish.  Bolger ran the 8K distance in 27:43, good for 17th place out of 94 competitors. Freshman Nicholas Stolar finished in 19th position with a time of 27:52 while classmate Ryan Haylett toured the course in 28:34, placing 25th. Sophomore Steven Lovewell earned 38th position with his 29:15, and junior Christopher Strohm rounded out team scoring with a 43rd-place finish in 29:38.

The men’s squad placed fourth out of eight teams with a score of 116. Wayne State won the men’s race with 28 points, followed by Slippery Rock (45), Penn State’s club team, and Mercyhurst in the top four. SRU’s Matt Grey won the race in 26:09.

The Lakers next compete at the Carnegie Mellon Invitational Saturday, Oct. 10.
