In the latest addition of the ACHA D1 National Rankings, the Mercyhurst Lakers were ranked #25 in the nation appearing in the polls for the first time since the 2007-2008 pre-season ranking. The Lakers will have their work cut out for them this coming weekend as they will face-off in a home and home match-up against the Robert Morris University Colonials who are currently ranked #16 in the nation.
This past weekend the Lakers are coming off a two game sweep of Eastern Collegiate Hockey League Division Rivals from Niagara University and the University of Rochester by scores of 4-2 and 10-3 respectively. Mercyhurst came out strong on Friday night outshooting the Purple Eagles 22-6 in the first period, eventually defeating Niagara University with a strong team performance. The Lakers were led by transfer sophomore Jeff Monnin who opened the scoring late in the first period of play while adding a power play insurance marker later in the game to seal the win for the Lakers.
On Saturday, the Hurst dominated the University of Rochester Yellow Jackets by a score of 10-3 outshooting them 59-20. Six different Lakers recorded multiple points on the night with 16 players recording at least on point. Jeff Monnin added 3 assists to his weekend performance earning the honor of ECHL Player of the Week for his 5 point weekend performance. This is the second Mercyhurst player to receive the ECHL Player of the Week Award.
