Bloomsburg, Pa. – Mercyhurst tennis player Tim Hansson advanced to the semifinals of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Individual Tournament Saturday at Bloomsburg University. Hansson rolled to a pair of straight-set victories to move into the final four, set for Sunday.
Hansson beat Millersville’s Marty Makowski 6-1, 6-1 and followed that up with a 6-4, 6-4 win over West Chester’s Mark Covert. He will face Kutztown’s Andy Torrealba in the semifinals. Mijo Cotic was ousted in the first round of singles play, losing to Torrealba 6-3, 6-4.
Mercyhurst’s doubles tandem of Cotic and Adam Marnik advanced to the finals with an 8-4 victory. The team will face Kutztown’s Lukas Labitsch and Arpit Sharma for the championship Sunday.
In women’s action, Kim Ezzo won two matches before being eliminated in the quarterfinals. She defeated Saquatia Knight of Cheyney and then won a nailbiter over Kutztown’s Sabrina Arnaud 4-6, 7-6 (7-4), 10-7. She was then beaten by Kutztown’s Rhoini Das 6-1, 6-3. Jaclyn McLean lost to Bloomsburg’s Alison Carney 6-1, 6-3 in the first round.
In doubles play, McLean and Meghan Raynor defeated Jess Lodek and Jackie Kramer 8-2 to advance to the quarterfinals, but they lost to Helena VanEysendeyk and Axelle Fernandez of California (Pa.) 8-1.
